spike in organic eating during covid

More positives in the news this week in terms of consumer spending habits indicate a trend towards organic lifestyle choices during the pandemic.
Yahoo Finance is reporting a surge in organic food and drink sales.

Many consumers are prioritizing nutrition over cost as Covid-19 infections continue to rise across the U.S. Sales of organic food and drinks surged 25% for the 17-week period ended June 27, according to Nielsen data. That’s faster than the pace of total growth in the food segment.

Meat, seafood and frozen foods with the organic label have seen some of the largest increases from last year, the data show.

Consumers are grabbing more organics off of the grocery shelf in an effort to take care of family and friends, said General Mills Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Harmening. The food maker saw a boost in its organic portfolio in the fourth quarter, in particular its Annie’s macaroni and cheese brand that’s popular with families.

Produce News reports that fresh produce is showing the same sort of surge with organic sales up by 17% between April and June, 2020.

Total organic fresh produce sales and volume registered double-digit growth in the second quarter of 2020, with April-June 2020 sales increasing 17 percent and volume up 18 percent from the same period in 2019, according to the Q2 2020 Organic Produce Performance Report released exclusively by the Organic Produce Network and Category Partners.

And this is not just in the United States. According to European Supermarket Magazine, Denmark is reporting record sales in the organic category.

Organic food sales in Denmark increased by 9% year-on-year in 2019, to DKK 14.1 billion (€1.89 billion), accounting for 12% of total sales, according to the latest data from Statistics Denmark.

I think that all of us can say that the pandemic has been an opportunity for perspective. Such a global disaster is not something most of us ever anticipated experiencing. It certainly helps us firm up the list of priorities and put a focus on how important our health really is. What this says to me is that people realize that an organic lifestyle is healthier and they are now willing to invest in it.
